Almost every round we issue new ASRs (Additional Supplementary Regulations) as we fine-tune the regs along the way to implement little improvements where possible here and there.

This Round 4 however presents a rather significant ASR release, as for once and for all we tackle the controversial issue of stripping the interior for Street categories. Or rather, what can and what can’t be stripped from your car, and what can and cannot be removed and replaced with alternative material/trim.

The official ASR may be downloaded/viewed here, but allow me to make it simpler for the rest of us that speak the Duchess of Cambridge’s English:

We have defined previously that a Street car is a non-competition-prepared vehicle that must look streetable, and that this definition is added with the simple caveat that we are not idiots i.e. we have the right to refuse a car entry or disqualify it if the car does not look “streetable” enough.

Here’s a simple explanation: if you drove by a Police road block, do you think your car would be pulled over for closer scrutiny, even though it has legal road tax and plates?

Either way, since some people really do think we are idiots, we have implemented tighter regulations on the matter.

Definition of a Street-spec car adds the following criteria:-

A) Fitted with factory fitted OEM equipment working amenities as listed below:
- Air-conditioning switches and blower. Compressor, condenser and evaporator may be removed;
- Audio head unit and switches must be in place. Rear speaker may be removed;
- OEM Seatbelts at the front left and right.

B) Fitted with interior luxuries as listed below:
- Full length OEM carpets;
- All Door trim panels and switches;
- All pillar trim panels (A, B, and C pillars);
- Roof headlining.

C) Fitted with OEM full length dashboard with all listed panels:
- Instrument Panel and cowling;
- Steering Column cover and indicator stalks;
- Centre console and switches;
- Gear console and gear shift cover.

Stripping the interior of a Street-spec car
No stripping or replacement of any other parts or sections of the interior is permitted except to accommodate safety equipment, these being Rollcage, Harness, Cut-Off switch, and Fire Extinguisher. To make this simpler though, the following can be removed:

- Rear Seat Back;
- Rear Seat Cushion;
- Rear wheel arch trim;
- Rear parcel shelf or speaker shelf board.

And last on this matter, the following may be replaced with non-OEM plastic panels:

- Rear inner-door or Rear inner-side panels
- Audio head unit

If you removed the above, then the resultant hole MUST be closed off with some other material ie sheet plastic or polycarbonate. There must be no gaping holes.

In simple words: would you bring Kim Kardashian out in a date with a car with had a big hole in the centre console where the head unit is supposed to be? No right?

Other regulations on modifications to Street-spec cars

- No fuel surge tanks;
- No fuel pumps or fuel lines within the passenger compartment;
- Tyres must not protrude beyond the bodywork. If they do, then you need to add flares and arches to cover the rubber.

With that, we trust that you have been informed, and will check the legality of your Street-spec vehicle and prepare accordingly in time for this weekend’s race!

This will be the 2nd internship of “Slide School” for 2012! It’s not just for RWD cars, but FWD and 4WD are encouraged to join, we’ve altered the syllabus to focus also on car control for those who don’t just want to drift.

How does it work? Simple: a nice, big, open area; experienced instructors (errr, that’s me and Faisal); some basic guidelines and courses; and the recommendation to drive it like you stole it!

DETAILS:
16 June 2012, 930am till we’re all tired (usually by mid-afternoon);
RM 200 per driver for a maximum of about 10-12 participants;
RM 700 per driver to rent my BMW E30 325i SLUTCAR, maximum 2 drivers; fuel and tyres included;
Venue is Shah Alam Stadium Carpark;
Tents, chairs and tables as well as drinking water provided.

Prior to Round 2, the Aerorace had a full service. FA Racing’s Chassis Guru, Faidzil Alang also set the car up differently to improve handling, additionally different suspension geometry was utilised. On top of that, to improve my driving position a 30mm Steering spacer was machined and installed.

There was one downside; Tires. The softer SG compound in the correct size couldn’t be sourced in time so a harder compound and larger 205/50-15 in GG Compound were used . Due to the larger size tire, overall circumference has increased 1.7%. This has had an effect on accelleration.

The event day was thoroughly dry this time, and Hot & Humid to boot. It was so hot the track temps reached 46 degrees peak.

Practice Session
With the new tires, I went out to get a feel of the car and take note of any changes. The acceleration out of the slower 2nd gear turns were slightly dulled. Cornering stability wasn’t too much different, with only slight under steer on exit. The digital dash still wasn’t’ fully functioning, showing only water temp and oil pressure. After doing a single flying lap I came into the pits.

Session 1
Managed to clock my best of the day of 2’39.169 early in the session. The lost time in Sectors 1 and 3 was mainly down to the larger rolling tire, resulting in my times being 1.5 seconds slower than our best in February’s Rd1. Other than the slower acceleration out of Turn 2 and Turn 9 the car felt fine. There was some intermittent engine cut out occasionally when accelerating in 3rd and 4th gear. It lasted less than half a second each time but it was noticeable. There was some under steer through the faster left hand Turns 5 & Turns 12. On my subsequent laps as the tires got warmer the understeer became noticeable in the mid speed right handers as well. Faidzil went to work on the rear anti-rollbars to reduce the under steer.

Session 2
On my outlap the car started sputtering and ended running on 3 cylinders. Drama. After plugs swap, I went out and did 4 flying laps in succession. A Best lap of 2’39.218 failed to improve on Session 1’s time. And top speed was 4 km/h down from last February’s Round1. The changes Faidzil did to the antiroll bars improved corner turn-in but still wasn’t able to rid it if the exit understeer.

So finishing 4th we missed out on the podium by 1.2 seconds. That’s a lifetime away as both 2nd and 3rd place winners were doing 2’37s.

With the third round of SNF 2012 coming up this weekend on the 7th of April, we see door-to-door fighting make a comeback to Sepang Circuit after a 6-week hiatus for the Malaysia F1 GP break. Yup, that was a pretty killer F1 round we had this year, but hey, it’s time we get back to some real racing, right?

Leading up to this weekend, let’s take a quick look at the current championship standings.

In the Mini Classic category, it’s a no-brainer that experienced JB-jockey Hafiz Bachok is far in the lead, but with 15 cars (FINALLY!!) joining this coming round, the Mini Classic category is set to be a hot one! They’re even importing their own Commentator (Raja Azman) that will join our regular and much loved Sutan Mustaffa to add some flavour.

The Super 1500 Forced Inductionclass is a fight, but with 2 wins back-t0-back Aril Hamka leads Ahmad Shariffuddin (“PokDeng”). Aril is back again for Round 3, but the goss on Facebook from PokDeng is that his car might not be ready in time? PokDeng has proven himself with a podium in the FF Turbo category of MegaLAP 4 weeks ago against much more powerful 2.0L turbo machinery, so we’re really looking forward to him coming back to spank the rest of the crew in Super 1.5 FI. Personally I’m looking forward to Hari Haran making a return: that turbocharged Swift 1.3 has so much potential!

SinghBoy chases Razee in Special Kei

It’s in the Special Kei category that things are really interesting: Mohd Shairazi Izhar (“Razee”) got a jump on everyone by winning Round 1, with Logesvaran (“SinghBoy”) joining the ride. Good finishings in Round 2 mean that Razee and SinghBoy lead the pack, but it was Tarmizi that won Round 2 by a good 4-seconds. If Tarmizi can keep it up and Singhboy manages to displace Razee, then we’ll have an all-out battle for the Championship lead in Special Kei.

Campro Chaseis under threat. The R3 threat. Take it from me, I was one of the Founding Fathers of R3, and I know their capability. If Shafiq wins again, and bags the fastest lap and most laps lead points bonuses as well, he could well and truly take the lead in the Campro Chase Championship. BUT.. if Hasrin can hold out and keep Shafiq at bay, which we know he can coz they had a great scrap the last round, then it’s going to be a fight! Yeah!But you know what? Izwan Baharom is back this round, and based on his performances last year, we know he will draw blood this round. Now, if only Michael Ayyavu can make a comeback…

Can the works team hold out against the privateers?

In Race Cars Class 1, Akina Teo leads the Championship although he hasn’t yet taken the top step of the podium. Faizal Hassim is going to try and close that gap, and from what we know Boy Wong’s car has been sold off. These boys are FAST: take the opportunity to stand by the pit wall during their race, and you can feel the the raw speed and power as they blast past and out-brake each other into Turn 1.

Race Cars Classs 2is really tight though, currently lead by Jeffrey Moo. Back when I was racing my Super Satria 1600 for MatSpeed at Saturday Night Batu Tiga, ‘Uncle Jeffrey’ would be racing in his “Taxi Bukan Untuk Disewa” Wira racing car, and his friendly and affable nature has endeared him to many. He’ll have to drive hard though this weekend, as Mok Kah Yuan, Winson Eu, and Lee Kum Soon are going to push him hard!

GAB Suspension Street 1.8 NA.. well, what can we say? Take a look at the Championship table yourself (CLICK HERE). Nasrul Azizi suddenly finds himself in the lead, but I am sure that he is under no impression that it’s going to be easy to stay up there. Fairuz and Fadzaliisam, who had a massive get-together last round which saw them both out of the race, have fixed up their cars and are back, with full intentions to make a difference. Sadly, Johan Harun (“Joe MIVEC”) has mentioned on Facebook that he will most probably will miss this round which is a great shame as we’re really looking forward to the Battle of the NA Kings!

Which brings us to GAB Suspension Street 1.8 VTEC & Forced Induction. Nicknamed “Mafia Category” since the very beginning, for a reason: these buggers take no prisoners! Ahmad Firdaus Azman (“Daud”) is far away in the lead, but it is by no means secure. Last round, Satria Turbo boy Farid Jamal had to pull out with a blown engine, but Philip Tang took his place to push push push and win the chequered flag on the last lap! Still, Daud emerge from Round 2 with more points thanks to Fastest Lap and 4 Laps Lead. And of course, there’s some sort of expectation from Khair Nur Ariff (“Kino”), who was Champion of the Proton Track Carnival series back in 2004.

So that’s the run-down to this coming weekend’s action. And really, there is only one way to enjoy it: right at the Pit Wall! Action starts at 730pm folks: don’t be late!

Of all the top Sports Car racers in the late-60s / early-70s, there really is only one name that comes to mind when I see a photo of the fearsome widow-maker Porsche 917: Pedro Rodriguez.

Indulged with high-performance cars and racing motorcylces from an early age by his wealthy (Corrupt? He was Head of the Mexican Police Motorcycle division, go figure!) father, Pedro first came to the notice of the European racing fraternity in a Ferrari which he drove with his equally-talented brother Ricardo at Le Mans in 1960, where they almost won.

Pedro – who famously always carried a bottle of Tabasco sauce with him – went on to carve out  fabulous career as a Sports Cars ace, and was considered the best driver of his era in the wet. In 1970 he joined the Wyer-Gulf-Porsche team and is now legendarily known as the tamer of the incredible Porsche 917 (which in early days would lift at over 200 km/h!), becoming two-time Sports Cars World Champion. Watch the YouTube clip below and enjoy classic footage of Pedro drifting the widow-maker 917 in the pouring rain at Brands Hatch in 1970. Pure magic!

Pedro developed into one of the sport’s greatest all-rounders, racing CanAm, NASCAR, rallies and even becoming North American Ice Racing champion in 1970. In his NASCAR career, he earned two top-tens, including a 5th in the 1965 World 600 race. How’s that for versatility? Could you ever see an F1 driver these days being so multi-talented? I guess that’s what Kimi was trying to prove with his 2-year foray in WRC.

Sadly, Pedro joined younger brother Ricardo in the great racetrack in the sky, when the Ferrari 512M he was racing in a sports prototype racing event in 1971 caught fire in an accident. Mexico grieved at the loss of another home-born hero, and the Mexico City racing circuit was named after them: Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez (“Rodríguez Brothers Racetrack”).

Our friends at Zerotohundred.com have announced their Time To Attack Round 1 event which will take place on 20 May at Sepang Circuit. Therefore, for us to proceed with the planned MegaLAP PutraJaya Time Attack in conjunction with the huge ‘Hari Belia Negara’ celebrations by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on the weekend of May 27th doesn’t really make sense. To anyone.

So the next date we’re looking at will be either the 17th of June or 8th of July (preferably June though). Location? PutraJaya may still be possible, but we’re also thinking it’s about time we revive what we were the first to start back in 2009: Bukit Putus Touge Course!

And we’ll call it “MegaHILL Time Attack”, where the Men will stand out from the Boys.

Yes, for 2012 we’re doing more of these driving courses which encourage you to drive like a twat, take it to the limit, and maximise the possibilities and your car control!

So we’ve rebranded and changed the name, it’s a “Slide School”. It’s not just for RWD cars, but FWD and 4WD are encouraged to join, we’ve altered the syllabus to focus more on car control.

Ok, seriously: when we were at Proton R3, once in awhile (like a few times a week!) we’d take some cars to the test track after hours when it’s not being used, and just drive like idiots: 100kmh initiations and spins, Scandinavian flicks and 3rd gear drifts. We did it all, and we’re so much better drivers because of it. We encourage you to be just as irresponsible as we were: within the confines of our Slide School!

Many people outside of UK motorsports don’t know about Cadwell Park, but it’s a gem. 3.62km in length, it’s now considered too narrow to be used for modern top-level car racing, but the British Superbikes still visit every year.

It’s authentically old-skool, with a narrow ribbon of tarmac winding it’s way amongst the beautiful rolling Lincolnshire woodland greens north-east of London. All of 15ft wide, minimum kerbs, dips and jumps and tight corners, and no gravel traps – just slippery grass to aid your car’s slide all the way to the tyre wall if you leave the track!

It’s famously known for a section known as “The Mountain”: A 3rd gear left into and 2nd gear right then flat on the gas up the hill, and the road drops away. Go quick enough and you’re airborne, like that pink Time Attack Evo in the main picture.

In summary: it’s a Real Man’s circuit. Don’t apply if you’re the type that ends up in gravel traps.

Do some searching and you may find videos of Vicky and Tiff Needell  playing there in earlier seasons of Fifth Gear.

Anyway, here’s 2 videos which are pretty much give you a feel (and after, a hunger!) for the circuit:

Supercars
The definition is straight-forward. Supercars with tyres up to semi-slick level will now participate in this category only, unless they are Racing Cars whereby they will categorised into Open Spec category.
What’s a Supercar? Don’t test everyone’s intelligence: Nissan GTRs, Ferraris, Porsche 911s and above (Caymans aren’t ‘supers’), Honda NSX, Mercedes SLS, Ford GT40, etc.

So what’s new for 2012?

Iceman is back. Kimi Raikkonen will be in the #9 Lotus-Renault, partnering another returnee Romain Grosjean. Their form in the Winter Championship has been impressive. Kimi being fastest on the first and last day of Testing. This despite missing the 2nd test. But winter testing can be misleading ( remember Williams in 2011 was impressive in testing, but a farce once season began). Kimi himself says he doesn’t know what to expect. But all I care is Mr Monosyllabus is back, and that means 6 World Champions will be on the grid in Melbourne.

The second thing that is new in 2012 is Ugly Cars. All bar McLaren has adopted the high nose with a step just rear of the front wheels. I have never been a fan of raised nose cars since Benneton introduced them back in 93, and that the FIA will be implementing further “nose lowering” regs in the years to come is good news to me.

Williams will be Renault powered this year, and Bruno Senna will be driving one of the cars. Midfield battles aplenty for Bruno. The cars are reminiscent of the old Rothman Williams Renault as well.

There will also be some new drivers, in the back of the grid, but none of them excite me. It’s not like back in 2007 when we had the Hamilton kid making his debut, or when Kimi himself made his debut after a scant 22 races in lower formulae.

The Malaysian owner 1MF1 will be running as Caterham F1 this year, after 2 years in several Lotus guise. You won’t be able to miss them on track as they have one of the ugliest car in 2012.

Less than 24 hours to the first race weekend of the year. Can’t wait

However, Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, better known as Lord March, has better ideas. His family estate, has been host to the Goodwood Festival since 1993, and 1998 he reopened the Goodwood Circuit.

The fast flowing circuit in it’s heydays featured some awesome action. And thanks to Lord March, the Goodwood Revival has done just that, revive classic race cars in awesome action.
