F1: It’s the 80′s again on the engine front.

As announced on Wednesday FIA has passed the ruling that from 2014 all F1 cars willl be powered by 1.6 litre V6 twin turbo limted to 15,000 RPM. This is a U turn from the original 1.5 litre in line 4 that was supposed to be introduced in 2013.

Now, as some of us would remember back in the 80′s F1 were mostly powered by 1.5 litre V6 turbo engines, that ran up to 1,000 bhp in qualifying trim.Legendary engines like the BMW’s mounted in the rear of the Brabhams or the Renaults V6, which was the first winners in the turbo era. Even TAG got into it, commisioning Porsche to develop the engine for McLaren. And who could forget the Honda engine that powered McLaren to 15 out of 16 wins in 1988 , driven by legends Senna and Prost.

Personally I can’t wait for 2014. It wont’ be spectacular sounding as the Ford Cosworth V8, Honda V10, Ferrari V12 of the early 90s, but it will be something new after over a decade of V8.
