HD VIDEO: Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6 Track Impression
Last and most magnificent of the Widowmakers: rear-engine rear-wheel drive Porsche with a truck-sized KKK turbo, no electronic safety nets, and semi trailing arm rear suspension not unlike that used on older 911s, but with coil-over dampers rather than torsion bar springs.
Steering feel is typically of 964 Porsches and it’s incredibly detailed, it’s not so much a flow of information but almost as if you’re biologically-wired into the car ala the Na’vi from James Cameron’s “Avatar” movie. Chassis is very composed, and there’s so much traction with that rear-engine platform. Most of all, to an experienced driver, the car is infinitely rewarding! I only did 4 laps but even then, straight out of the box with worn Goodyear Eagle tyres, those were 4 laps of bliss.
There’s no such thing as throttle modulation. Get off the accelerator and it loses all it’s boost, so it’s a case of diving in with just the right amount of turn-in, feel the back come around and get on the throttle immediately by about 50%, wait-wait-wait for the boost to come and in, and then ‘whooosshhh’ throw in some correction and hold on! Even with that style I’m already halfway past the apex and in midst of exiting the turns when it gathers itself up and spins up those rear-wheels. *slurp!*
These old RR-layout Porsches are such a challenge. It’s a beast, and I love it. Love It!!!
Now, I wonder if my fiancee wouldn’t mind if I sold the apartment to raise some cash…
